Games Unplugged

Last month our older cohort had the opportunity to participate in a games program offered at Oakwood Library by a group called the Hand Eye Society.  It was an amazing program where the kids not only got to play games but make their own and explore games that weren't plugged in. This was topped it off with a visit to Snakes and Lattes to enjoy more old school no tech gaming.

Like so many things, there are opportunities for learning while having fun when it comes to board games.  There is a huge list of benefits to playing board games.

Math - Most board games require some sort of counting (ie moving your piece around a game board). Basic counting and the repetition of this counting is great practice and a child will hardly notice that they are practicing a very basic math skill.

Reading - Not all but some games will require reading whether it is reading instructions, instruction cards or the spaces on the game board.

Fine Motor Skills - Often times a board game will have small pieces or cards to hold.  It takes practice to hold fanned out playing cards or to move a play piece around the board.

Cognitive Skills - Board games will usually come with a set of basic rules and concepts that a child must follow.  They may often have to use logical thinking, strategizing and problem solving.

Social Skills - Most importantly, board games can help improve and develop a child's social skills. Social skills such as taking turns, engaging in acceptable social behaviour and dealing with winning or losing can be difficult skills to teach or learn, but can be much easier when presented in a fun, positive engaging activity.

Having your child come up with a simple game with rules and story is also a great activity.  Below is a printable "game board" for you to use with your child.
