BeMakers Creating Math Tools

Place values in math is being taught earlier and earlier and is an important fundamental in math. This is a simple yet highly effective to help your child learn the place values. It gives a great visual and opportunity for hands on learning. Here's how:

Materials Needed

Styrofoam Cups

Markers

On each up, along the edge/lip, write the numbers evenly spaced from 0 to 9.

Set one cup aside. This cup represents the 1's place value.

Cup # 2 Write one zero along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 10's place value.

Cup # 3 Write two zeros along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 100's place value.

Cup # 4 Write three zeros along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 1000's place value.

Cup # 5 Write four zeros along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 10,000's place value.

Cup # 6 Write five zeros along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 100,000's place value.

Cup # 7 Write six zeros along the cup at each number. This cup represents the 1,000,000's place value.

Repetitive but super easy right?

As you can see by the picture below, once all the cups are placed one inside of the other, you can turn the cups to different number combinations.

This activity can not only be used for understanding place value, but can also help to explore practicing counting forward and backward, decomposing numbers to expanded forms and learning the names of larger numbers.

During one of our math explorations at BeKids, our BeMakers made some place value cups of their own. As you can see below, we also added in some mathematical equation cups (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Some of our programs use expensive materials and cannot be substituted with cheaper alternatives. As it is, these fees are then put onto the parents, some too high for parents to afford. To make our programs available to all children we ask for your support to lower the cost of our programs.

Thank you.
